I have a weakness for time loop plots. There are serious problems with the trope, from a writing perspective. The character in the loop is effectively immortal. The characters who do not remember previous loops mechanistically go through the same events over and over, with any deviations traceable back to the looper, making it easy for writers to treat them like nothing but tools in the looper’s personal quest. The first and best time loop plot, Groundhog Day, never bothered to offer an explanation of the phenomena, and when you’ve seen the menu of flimsy explanations that subsequent stories have offered, that begins to seem like the best choice.
