The Constitutional Crisis as Covered by Liberal Currents
Catching you up on where I'm editing and writing
These days I am writing at a higher volume than I have in quite some time. All over at Liberal Currents of course, and all with the intention of contributing something to the opposition to the Trump administration. Let me catch you up:
Defending Democracy When Voters Make Bad Choices. I had seen a few too many expressions of disenchantment with voters, and did not want liberals to fall into the kind of anti-democratic rhetoric I saw in libertarian circles when I was a student at GMU. The fact of the matter is you need free and fair elections far more when your party is out of power than when it is in it.
Now More Than Ever, We Must Resist Trump. I had seen one too many centrist pundit claim that this time we needed to be more reasonable, more gentle in our rhetoric, less unbending. The crisis is much worse this time around!
We Must Defend and Build a True Opposition Media. One thing people don’t appreciate is that the existence of a widely heard opposition is not just some matter of moral principle, it’s a practical impediment to dictatorship. Too many outlets who had an adversarial stance last time have moderated their tone.
Brains Poisoned by the "Twitter Files" Cannot Recognize the Genuine Speech Crisis in Front of Their Faces. Donald Trump blatantly punishes high profile critics. The Anti-cancel culture crowd, with a few very admirable exceptions, has gone silent on the matter.
Elon Musk Is a Bigger Short Term Threat Than Trump. Something I have had to eat crow on. I way underestimated how dangerous Musk specifically would be in the administration, how much of a difference he would make once inside it. His unchecked smash and grab streak the past few days is unlike anything we have ever seen before. He has the makings of a personalist who will outlast Trump.
Of course, I am not even close to the only person writing at Liberal Currents. Below are a few samples of what we’ve been doing. Now, the pieces:
The Crisis of Democratic Governance by Samantha Hancox-Li. An internal criticism of blue state governance aimed at making them more viable places for people to flee from GOP tyranny.
Misinformation Against Trans Healthcare by Vikas Valiveti. The obsessively anti-trans angle of the Trump administration and its lackeys is one of the ugliest aspects of a thoroughly ugly presidency. Arm yourself with some basic knowledge on the topic, which Vikas provides.
Swiping Left on MAGA by Toby Buckle. A counter to the “lonely young men” narrative.
The Politics of Passports by Miles Whitney. The impact the Trump administration is already having on Americans’ freedom of movement.
Meta Mirror World by Katherine Alejandra Cross. The solipsism of social media and how it brought us here.
